88 This resembles the permissibility of wiping (masah) over any bandage or wound. As one needs not to remove the bandage over a wound and wash the part under the bandage, the rule is the same for a crowned or filled tooth. RULINGS REGARDING TOOTH FILLING It is permissible to have a decayed or broken tooth crowned or filled. However, it is not permissible to have it done just for the sake of appearance, without any necessity. According to Imâm Muhammad رحمــة الل عليــه , one of the jurists of the the Hanafî Madhhab, it is permissible to have shaking, loose teeth attached with gold wires or to have affixed a gold tooth in place of one extracted. On the other hand, in the interpretation of Imâm Âzam Abû Hanîfah it is not permissible to have any tooth crowned with gold, but permissible with silver. Imâm Abû Yûsuf رحمــة الل عليــه , according to one report, has expressed a view the same as that of Imâm Muhammad رحمــة الل عليــه . In this respect, one may act on the opinion of Imâm Muhammad رحمـة الل عليـه in the crowning of any tooth with gold. In this regard, scholars of Islâm have issued fatwas (legal decisions) based on the interpretations of the two scholars (Al-Imâmayn, i.e. Imâm Abû Yûsuf رحمــة الل عليــه and Imâm Muhammad رحمــة الل عليــه . In addition, Shaikh Al-Islâm Uryânizâdah, an Ottoman scholar, issued fatwas in favour of tooth filling.
