Nafs Al-Ammârah, the lower self is the origin of all sins and bad manners. With regard to the Nafs Al-Ammârah, our Prophet ﷺ has said: “Your biggest enemy is your nafs which is between your eye-brows”. Now, let us learn more about Nafs Al-Ammârah, the lower self from the book "Miftah AL-Qulûb” (The Opening of the Hearts) written by Muhammad Shamsuddîn Nûrî قــدس ســره . AL-NAFS AL-AMMÂRAH Man has two spirits: One is called the animal spirit (Ruh Al-Hayawânî), which is created by the manifestation of Allâh’s attribute of Jalâl (majesty) and the other is called the human spirit (Ruh Al-Insânî) which is created by the manifestation of Allâh’s attribute of Jamâl (beauty). The human body is ruled by these two spirits and each spirit has a wazir (minister of state) and a Shaykh Al-lslam (minister of religion). The wazir (minister of state) of the animal spirit is the Aql Al-Ma’ash (mind based on material gain) and its adviser is Satan. The human spirit’s wazir (minister of state) is Aql Al-Ma’ad (Mind based on spiritual gains) and its adviser is the angel. The animal spirit enjoys eating, drinking and wearing fine clothes.
